Panic Attacks

Most of us have experienced the sensation of ‘butterflies in the tummy’.

Panic attacks are much more severe and usually include increased heartbeat, hyperventilation, weakness at the knees, sweating, pins and needles sensation and/or dizziness.

If it is an acute attack – people often fear they are going to collapse or die. Sometimes the fear of an attack is enough to cause major problems.

A panic attack is a loss of control – therefore the primary task is to re-establish control.

Panic Busters

  • Diaphragmatic breathing – will slow down the rate of breathing of anyone experiencing a panic attack. (See Self-Help Tips/Trechniques)

  • Another technique is to focus on something external – such as counting the number of blue things that can be seen. (Blue is a calming colour!)

  • Understanding the Freeze, Fight or Flight Syndrome and how it affects a person physically and emotionally can be very useful.

  • Understanding what is happening can reduce fear, confusion and anxiety levels
